MARTYRS
OF RELIGIO ANTINOI

We honour the following Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Gender Queer, Gender-Non-specific, Intersex, Asexual (LGBTQ+), people - or their straight allies - across millennia who became ‘Martyrs’ of the Antinoan faith. We think of them in three categories:

1. Innocent Martyrs - Those who were killed, murdered, forcibly sacrificed or executed for being LGBTQ (or suspected of being LGBTQ+).

2. Sorrowful Martyrs - Those LGBTQ+ people who took their own life because they were LGBTQ+ (or suspected of being LGBTQ+).

3. Heroic Martyrs - LGBTQ+ people who fought for and died for our Cause..

There have been countless such tragedies unrecorded by history. The USA is listed the most because their news sources are easy to trawl through. It doesn’t mean that the USA is the worst place to live if you are LGBTQ+. The LGBTQ+ campaigning organisation AllOut stated that in Brazil, “It's dangerous. We are being Murdered. Every 20 hours at least one LGBT+ person's life is taken”. Many Gay men are ‘disappearing’ in Chenya, Russia.

The list below lists only the cases we know of, from recorded history, Worldwide. We include details about them where know. Sadly, we often just names, dates and countries. In recent years the number of Trans people being murdered has increased alarmingly. It is worth noting that many of those victims were male to female and black transgender women – so there is apparent transphobia, misogyny and racism as well as homophobia evident in perpetrating many of these terrible crimes. The media does not always publish full information about each victim, so many of those named below have details missing. The Police and media often mis-gender these martyrs as well.

THE UNNAMED HISTORICAL MARTYRS

Circa 2 BCE - 119 CE

‘Lindow Man’ UK aged approx. 25, was sacrificed - along with hundreds of other Celtic ‘bog people’ found all over Europe. The body of Lindow Man was found in 1990, buried, face-down, in a peat marsh/bog in Lindow Moss, Cheshire, England. A Roman of this historical period, Tacitus, wrote about the Celtic practice of sacrificing venerated, young, gay men and carefully placing them in bogs, as sacred offerings. The Celts would have known that the natural bog chemicals would preserve the bodies. When the body was discovered, the UK media dubbed him ‘Pete Marsh’. He had a band of fox fur around one arm, so he is also referred to as ‘Louvernios (Latin for Fox Man) of Lindow’ - the name given to him by 20th century archaeologists. More recent research has ascertained that he was Irish and probably a Druid who, knowingly, travelled to the UK to be sacrificed to prevent the Roman invasion of Ireland. The Romans never did reach Ireland – so it worked.

12th to 18th centuries CE

Across Europe - hundreds (approx. 1,000) of known or suspected LGBT people (often known as ‘Sodomites’) officially executed, or Murdered by civilians, as a result of the Christian Inquisition.

1314 – 1317 CE

The Knights Templar were devout Christians who formed an order of crusaders which later became a hugely powerful, wealthy, multinational, institution. It was, and is, believed that the Templars maintained close bonds through homosexual love pairings. Kings wanted their wealth so, in 1314 a warrant for their arrest was issued and over 700 were rounded up and tortured to make them confess to having gay sex and other Christian sins. Most were executed over the next few years.19th to early 20th centuries CE

Across Europe - hundreds (approx. 300) of unnamed LGBT people officially executed, or Murdered by civilians, as a result of Christian based anti-gay legislation, spiritual apartheid and tacit support for the murderers.

1939-1945 CE

Across Europe - approx.15,000 LGBT people Murdered during the Nazi holocaust in Europe. We have named, and counted serarately, several that we could find details of below.

Approximate total of the unnamed historical martyrs – 17,025

1969 CE onwards

We honour those lost to the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The World Health Organisation estimates that 39 million people have died, Worldwide, since the officially recognised start of the outbreak in the 1980s. Arguments are still on-going about the origin of the disease. Some believe it was deliberately transferred from apes to humans – specifically to LGBT humans. If so, then those 39 million people are innocent martyrs – although they haven’t been included below.

2005 CE onwards

- unknown number of murders as a result of Iraq’s Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani issuing a fatwa for the execution of gays in the "worst, most severe way".

Annually - many Brazilians, and LGBT+ people in other South American countries, are Murdered each year due to rampant homophobia and trans phobia. It is often overlooked or supported by local Police and officials. Many of the murders go unreported.

THE KNOWN HISTORICAL MARTYRS

339 BCE

Socrates, Greece, aged 71. Socrates is considered one of mankind’s first and greatest philosophers. He was proudly, and openly gay. He was put on trial to determine the philosopher’s guilt of two charges: impiety against the pantheon of Athens, and corruption of the youth of the city-state. He was found guilty and made to drink Hemlock poison. He is acknowledged as a Heroic Martyr in the faith of Antinous.

250 CE

St. Sebastian, Italy, age unknown. He was an early Christian saint and martyr. According to traditional belief, he was killed during the Roman emperor Diocletian's persecution of Christians. He is most commonly depicted in art and literature tied to a post or tree and shot with arrows, but this did not kill him. He was, according to his legend, rescued and healed by Saint Irene of Rome. Shortly after his recovery he went to Diocletian to warn him about his sins, and as a result was clubbed to death. Bishop Ambrose of Milan (Saint Ambrose) stated that Sebastian came from Milan and that he was already venerated there at that time. Saint Sebastian is a popular male saint, especially today among athletes. In historical times he was regarded as a saint with a special ability to intercede to protect from plague, and devotion to him increased greatly when plague was active. Many Gay Christians have adopted him as their patron Saint. He is acknowledged as a Heroic Martyr in the faith of Antinous.

305 CE

Apollonius and Philemon, Egypt, age unknown Apollonius was a Deacon of the Church, however, Roman citizens were compelled to demonstrate their piety to the Roman Gods by offering sacrifice. Any person who refused was put to death. He was ordered to make a pagan sacrifice at Antinoopolis in order to prove that he was not a practicing Christian. He couldn't bring himself to do that, so he asked his lover Philemon to make the sacrifice for him, since Philemon was a pagan. Their ruse was found out and they were executed together buy being tied in a sack and thrown in the river Nile. They are now Christian saints. They are also acknowledged as Heroic Martyrs in the faith of Antinous.

Circa. 400 CE

St. Sergius and St. Bacchus, probably in Roman Asia Minor (now Turkey), ages unknown. Sergius and Bacchus were fourth-century Roman Christian soldiers (officers) fighting under Emperor Galerius. They were held high in his favour until they were exposed as secret Christians. They were then severely punished. First, they were publicly humiliated by being chained, dressed in female attire and paraded around town. Bacchus then died during torture, and Sergius was beheaded.
The close ‘friendship’ between the two suggests that their relationship was a romantic one which has led to popular veneration of Sergius and Bacchus in the gay Christian community. They are acknowledged as Heroic Martyrs in the faith of Antinous.

1365

Giovanni di Giovanni – 15 year old boy executed for sodomy in Florence Italy on May 7th 1365 . Publicly castrated and then killed with a red hot iron inserted into his anus.

1431 CE

Jeanne d'Arc – known as Saint Joan of Arc or "The Maid of Orléans", France, aged approx. 19. She is considered by many to have been a Lesbian but that is no certain. She became a heroine of France for her role during Hundred Years' War between England and France. She received visions of the Archangel Michael, Saint Margaret, and Saint Catherine of Alexandria instructing her to support prince Charles VII and recover France from English domination at the time. The uncrowned King Charles VII sent Joan to the siege of Orléans as part of a relief mission. She gained prominence after the siege was lifted only nine days later.
She was captured at Compiègne by a group of French nobles allied with the English. She was later handed over to the English and put on trial by the pro-English bishop Pierre Cauchon on a variety of charges including immorality. After Cauchon declared her guilty she was burned at the stake on 30 May 1431She was canonized as a Roman Catholic saint. She is also acknowledged as a Heroic Saint in the faith of Antinous.

1677 CE

Dionysus Feldner and another 112 unnamed boys and 27 girls. Austria, ages – various. In, Salzburg was in the grip of extreme Christian fundamentalism. Rumours circulated of a mysterious person who was a werewolf, wizard known as Zauberjackl (Magic Jake). He was a 20-year-old man with red hair who "fancied the lads" and who had a reputation for hanging out with adolescents and teaching them the black arts. During routine questioning of a 12-year-old, crippled, street urchin named Dionysus Feldner claimed that "Zauberjackl" existed and was working with children, sexually and magically, to attract demons. It spawned a frantic witch hunt 139 street urchins were accused of being followers of Zauberjackl. Some were less than 10 years old. All of the children "confessed" under torture and were executed for witchcraft. It is the world's most infamous case of child witch trials. Zauberjackl was never captured.

Following his execution along with fifteen others, Pearse came to be seen by many as the embodiment of the rebellion. He was gay, which probably contributed to his sentence. He is acknowledged as a Heroic Martyr in the faith of Antinous.

1942 CE

Three young people were executed by the Nazi regime in Germany. Two were gay and one was an ally.

Sara ‘Henny’ Schermann, Germany, aged 30. She was a Lesbian woman who worked as a sales woman. Researchers assume she was arrested in a raid on a lesbian bar by the Nazis. This is supported by official documents stating she was a ‘libidinous [lustful] lesbian and moves only in such bars. Official Nazi paperwork records her as a ‘Stateless Jewess’ – all Jews were stripped of their German nationality. She was deported to Ravensbrück concentration camp in 1940. In 1942 she was selected by one of the Nazis’ death doctors, Dr Friedrich Mennecke. He – along with other doctors – controlled the selection of people deemed ‘unworthy of life’. Henny was sent to the gas chamber on 30 May 1942.

Mary Pünjer, Germany, aged 38. She was a Lesbian woman who worked in her parents’ business for women’s clothing in Wandsbek, a borough of Hamburg. On 24 July 1940 she was arrested by the Nazis, probably during a raid on a lesbian bar. She spent almost three months in police cells in Fuhlsbüttel, a concentration camp on the outskirts of Hamburg from where people were often sent to other camps.
On 12 October 1940 she was admitted to the Ravensbrück concentration camp. Official documents record that she was imprisoned because of her ‘political’ differences and because she was a ‘lesbian’.
In 1941 the Nazis decided to murder seriously ill concentration camp prisoners who were unable to work. They referred to them as ‘balast’. Women from Ravensbrück who fell into this category were sent to the camp at Bernburg near Dessau. This had been set up as a ‘hospital’ to murder sick and handicapped people under the Nazi ‘euthanasia’ policy.
Pünjer was gassed in the killing wing of the ‘Convalescent and Nursing Home’ at Bernburg, probably in spring 1942.

1943 CE

Elli Smula, Germany, aged 29. She was a Lesbian woman who was worked for Berlin Public Transport on the trams in Berlin. She was reported by her employer and arrested by the Nazis on 12th September 1940. She was interrogated by the Gestapo. They accused her of having sex at parties with female colleagues and not reporting for work the following day.
On 30 November 1940 she was deported to Ravensbrück concentration camp. The official documentation recorded the reason for her imprisonment was that she was a ‘political’ prisoner and added the word ‘lesbian’.
Little is known about her time in the camp other. But after the war her mother wrote that she died ‘quite suddenly’ in Ravensbrück on 8 July 1943.

Two suspects were arrested shortly after the attack and charged with first-degree murder following Shepard's death. Significant media coverage was given to the murder and to what role Shepard's sexual orientation played as a motive in the commission of the crime. The prosecutor argued that the murder of Shepard was premeditated and driven by greed. The defence counsel countered that they had intended only to rob Shepard but had killed him in a rage when Shepard made a sexual advance on one of them. A girlfriend of one of the attackers told police that he had been motivated by anti-gay sentiment but later recanted her statement, saying that she had lied because she thought it would help him. Both attackers were convicted of the murder, and each received two consecutive life sentences.

9/11 An unknown number of LGBT people will have been massacred in the terrorist attacks in the USA, on 9/11. Whilst they were not killed directly for their sexuality, they were being judged as sinners by the Muslim extremists who killed them. Islam considers homosexuality to be one of the greatest sins against Allah. So, we consider that were murdered, at least in part, due to their sexuality. Most statistical estimates of the LGBT community size work on a 5% average of the population. 2,996 people died on 9/11. So, we can assume that 150 of them were LGBT. We only know for certain that Mark Bingham (above) was one of them – so I have included 149 people in the numbers counted for this document.

Sonia/David Burgess, 2010, United Kingdom, aged 63. They were living a double life as a successful male lawyer and as a successful female one, within the same person. They had friends who knew them as one gender or the other – few knew both sides. Alongside their work with refugees and asylum seekers, Burgess represented transgender clients in a series of ground-breaking cases, in which they sought to win full legal recognition for his clients' changed gender status. In the 1980s, they acted on behalf of Mark Rees, a female-to-male transsexual who wished to have the gender on his birth certificate altered, and he also campaigned for the right of Stephen Whittle, a female-to-male transsexual parent to be legally recognised as the father of his children. Whittle, who wrote an online obituary referring to Burgess in female terms, remembers his lawyer coming up with "brilliant strategies… She would say they came to her in the shower." Burgess, he continues, had "a mission… to rescue the earth's dispossessed." He/she was pushed under an incoming train in London, by a transgender woman acquaintance.
Professionally, it seemed Burgess was drawn to defending the marginalised: the misfits and the outsiders who were too readily ignored or persecuted by the mainstream. And it is clear that, in their personal life, they underwent their own struggles with identity and social acceptance. The situation was described thus, with him as a man: "In many ways, he was something of an outsider himself; his was a position of empathy with the client, not sympathy. He did not do 'professional detachment'… We can speculate as to whether he enjoyed the way that he compartmentalised elements of his life or whether that was the only defence he had against a world which does not cope well with individuality such as his.
Was Burgess better able to relate to an asylum seeker's plight because of his own awareness of how difficult it could be to fit in, to find one's place in the world? Perhaps. But whereas Burgess was able to give so many of his clients the peace of mind they longed for, there is, for many of his friends, a sadness in the realisation that he seemed unable to achieve a similar resolution in his own life”.
On the day that Burgess was killed, he was living as a woman and yet working as a man. The killer was a transgender woman who Burgess had given shelter and legal support to. They have never explained their motive for the murder.

Jamey Rodemeyer, USA, aged 14. Jamey was open about his sexuality and faced severe bullying as a result of it. Rodemeyer encountered bullying throughout middle school because of his sexuality. Anonymously posted comments on his school account included hate messages such as, "JAMIE IS STUPID, GAY, FAT ANND [sic] UGLY. HE MUST DIE!" or "I wouldn't care if you died. No one would. So just do it :) It would make everyone WAY more happier!" Despite this, he used his experiences to make videos on YouTube under the username xgothemo99xx to help others who were experiencing similar situations. He also made a video for the "It Gets Better Project", a website dedicated to preventing teen suicide. Rodemeyer's inspiration to help others came from Lady Gaga, whom he admired most. He often referred to her in his videos and quoted her lyrics to provide guidance to others.
The police investigation concluded with no charges filed.
News of Jamey's death resulted in outrage by supporters worldwide. Following his death, Tim and Tracy Rodemeyer were interviewed by news media about their son and his struggles against bullying. Both parents took the opportunity to promote peace and equality in the hope of preventing occurrences similar to this.
Upon learning of Jamey’s death, Lady Gaga stated that she was extremely upset, spending her days "reflecting, crying and yelling." She went on to dedicate her song "Hair" to Jamey during a performance at the iHeartRadio music festival at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, saying, "I wrote this record about how your identity is really all you've got when you're in school...so tonight, Jamey, I know you're up there looking at us and you're not a victim. You're a lesson to all of us. I know it's a bit of a downer, but sometimes the right thing is more important than the music." Lady Gaga later met with President Barack Obama to discuss what his administration would do to prevent bullying in schools.
Also, in response to his death, reigning Miss New York Kaitlin Monte founded an online petition to bring the issue of cyberbullying (known as "Jamey's Law") to New York legislators. Shortly after, State Senator Jeffrey Klein proposed new cyberbullying legislation. The two joined to launch the New York Cyberbully Census.
Actor Zachary Quinto noted Rodemeyer's death as the genesis of his decision to come out publicly as gay, saying on his website "...but in light of Jamey's death – it became clear to me in an instant that living a gay life without publicly acknowledging it – is simply not enough to make any significant contribution to the immense work that lies ahead on the road to complete equality". In response to Quinto's coming out (and in reaction to gay suicides caused by bullying), Dan Kloeffler of ABC News Now also came out.
The Fox TV show Glee referred to Jamey, when Finn (Cory Monteith) talked to Santana (Naya Rivera) about gay suicide in the episode "I Kissed a Girl"; it was further alluded to him in the episode "On My Way" when David Karofsky (Max Adler), a gay student tries to kill himself by hanging as a result of the (cyber)bullying that had befallen him because of his sexuality, although he is saved by his father just in time.
On February 25, 2012, Michael Knote started a memorial page for Jamey after watching a news story about him. He founded a Facebook page and non-profit organization called "Have a Gay Day", referring to the double meaning of the word "gay"—"homosexual" and "cheerful". In 2012, the American metalcore band, The Bella Donna, produced a song based on the death of Jamey called "Don't Jump". The song has clips of one of Jamey's friends speaking on his behalf. The video has been posted at YouTube.
